Define: What Is Smoke Detector?

Smoke detectors are a crucial component of early fire warning systems, primarily providing early warning of smoke buildup during the initial stages of a fire. There are different kinds of smoke detectors based on their connection method, they can be categorized as addressable smoke detectors, conventional smoke detectors, optical smoke detector and wireless smoke detectors. While different systems cannot be interconnected, multiple linkable smoke detectors can be connected within the same system. This article focuses on programmable smoke detectors. For information on other types, please click the blue text above.

what is addressable smoke detector?

TX7100 addressable smoke detector is a sensor device used in fire alarm systems. Its core value lies in its precise location. Conventional fire alarm systems can only determine the specific area where an alarm has occurred, while in an addressable fire alarm system, each fire detector eg. TX7100 has a unique digital identity, allowing precise identification of the detector in a specific room. This feature is crucial in large facilities like hospitals and data centers. For example, our addressable smoke alarm system, used in a library in Singapore, can pinpoint a specific location within the building.

TX7100 smoke detector lighting rules

The smoke detector only senses and signals smoke and does not have audible or visual alarms. In different situations, the indicator light provides visual signals, as summarized below:

Monitoring: Red, flashes periodically; Alarm: Red, stays on; Ma-function: off or yellow irregular flashes

The light flashing frequency depends on the circuit capacity and is not a fixed value. The light flashing frequencies in the figure below are for reference only.

where to mount smoke detectors

1, First of all, we need to understand the assembly and expandability of the TX7100 smoke detector. It needs to be used in conjunction with the base. Because of the base, the expandability of this smoke detector is also increased. If connected to the sound base, the TX7100 will be transformed from a single smoke detector into a smoke alarm detector; if connected to the sound and light base, the TX7100 will be transformed into a smoke sound strobe smoke alarm detector. Please refer to the schematic diagram for details.

2, The TX7100 hard wired smoke detectors are low-voltage, 2 wired devices that feature signal terminals and remote indicator terminals.

Connect the wire in terminal as shown in Figure. Verify the device number or other device parameters if desired using handheld programmer then stick on the label before attaching detector. The sticker labels are available on the control panel.

Terminal Description:
1 Signal In (+), 2 Signal Out (+), 3 Remote Indicator (+), 4 Remote Indicator (+), 5 Signal In (-), 6 Signal Out (-), 7 Remote Indicator (-), 8 Remote Indicator (-)

3, The coverage of a TX7100 fire smoke detector is closely related to ground clearance. Typically, the detection radius for installations under 6 meters is 5.8 meters, covering an area of 60 square meters; the detection radius for installations between 6 and 12 meters is 6.7 meters, covering an area of 80 square meters. The distance between two smoke detectors is designed according to local regulations.

4, The TX7100 fire alarm smoke detectors can be installed on the ceiling, on the wall, or below the ceiling. However, the installation method depends on local regulations. For example, some regulations allow for both wall and ceiling mounting, so the TX7100 fire alarm smoke detectors can be installed this way. For example, see the figure below:

Addressable Fire Alarm Panels System

The Fire Alarm Panel System is a powerful system that not only requires a core control panel like the LPCB-certified TX7004 FACP Fire Alarm Control Panel, but also needs to be paired with other detectors, modules, and appropriate configurations based on the project’s scale to maximize its effectiveness.

Smoke Detector FAQ

How does an addressable smoke detector differ from a conventional smoke detector?

Unlike conventional detectors, which are grouped by zones, addressable smoke detectors operate individually and send digital signals to the FACP. This enables pinpoint detection, easier maintenance, and more accurate system diagnostics.

Addressable detectors offer several benefits, including:

Precise location identification

Reduced false alarms

Easier system maintenance and troubleshooting

Enhanced communication and integration with FDAS and FACP systems

Yes. Addressable smoke detectors are scalable and suitable for both small and large installations. They are particularly effective in complex facilities—such as hotels, hospitals, or office buildings—where detailed fire location information is critical.

They connect through a communication loop (often referred to as an “addressable loop”) linked to the FACP. Each detector has a unique digital address, allowing the panel to monitor status, perform self-checks, and identify alarm or fault conditions in real time.

When smoke is detected, the TX7100 sends a digital signal to the Fire Alarm Control Panel (FACP) via the addressable loop. The FACP then activates external sounders, strobes, or fire broadcast systems to alert occupants.

Key benefits include:

No noise pollution during normal operation or testing

Centralized control of alarm signals via FACP

Improved reliability by eliminating local sounder faults

Better integration with building-wide FDAS systems

The TX7100 is ideal for environments that require quiet monitoring, such as hotels, hospitals, offices, libraries, and data centers — where avoiding unnecessary sound disturbance is essential while maintaining precise fire detection through FDAS integration.
